Fall '23 Offerings

Happy Fall, Y’all!

A good bit of dancing is happening for the rest of the year, so I wanted to put all the information in one place for you. Keep reading for info about monthly social dancing, an upcoming special event, and ongoing group classes —a little bit of everything.

Monthly Social Dancing

IYKYK. And it’s continuing for the rest of the year with the same format, same time, same location, and on the first Sundays of the month. If you haven’t tried it out yet, please join us! The next one is THIS Sunday, Oct 1st.

The monthly Open Practice is our chance to use what we have been learning in classes on the social floor. It’s like any other dance party; there is a playlist of different dance styles (heavy on the West Coast Swing), we ask different people to dance, we socialize and enjoy each other’s company, EXCEPT here you are encouraged to ask questions, troubleshoot those new, not fully baked patterns with your partner and generally use this time for practicing if you so choose. It’s OK to just dance with no agenda as well! We always have folks attend who are trying out dancing for the first time as well as experienced dancers. All are welcome!

You will find this relaxed and enjoyable time of dancing at the UUC in Elarth Hall,  1301 Gladewood Drive, Blacksburg, VA 24060. We dance from 3 to 5:30 p.m., beginning with a 45-minute West Coast Swing lesson tailored to the group’s experience level, and it is $10 to attend.

Special Event: Adela Su is Coming to Roanoke!

One of my favorite things about teaching dance is hosting other teachers that I admire and learn from so that the whole community can enjoy. This gives us new ideas and techniques to help us stay current and grow as dancers.

We have the pleasure to learn and dance with All-Star West Coast Swing dancer, Adela Su on October 7th, 4-6 pm, at the Carilion Wellness Center on Starkey Road in Roanoke. You can find all the fabulous details here on my website and the Facebook event page. If you know some basics of West Coast Swing don’t miss this opportunity to get an outside perspective and have some fun with this community of dancers.

Fundamentals

A fundamentals class is designed to work on the skills essential for the chosen dance style. I am starting a new series beginning on October 8th- West Coast Swing at 2 p.m. and Argentine Tango at 3:15 p.m., both at Open Space Studios, 1711 North Main Street, Bburg. Each week's lesson will rotate through fundamental concepts and patterns to study the dance's connection, rhythms, spatial structure, pattern structure, character, and motion. You get an introductory course in that genre in any given six weeks. No partner is necessary, and classes are designed for all levels, both newcomer and returning students. The depth of each week will depend on the class’s needs. To progress and grow will require continuous learning, regular practice, and social dancing. Attending a consecutive six weeks is encouraged, but drop-ins are always welcome.

Each class is an hour of instruction with 15 minutes of social dancing and practice afterward. The cost to attend is $12 for a drop-in or $60 for a package of 6 classes (this can be used for any fundamentals class and does not have to be consecutive).
