This three-week course is the perfect way to dip your toes into a particular style while building a solid foundation for your dance. It will prepare you for the more extensive explorations in the NEXT STEPS and LABORATORY courses. During the INTRO course, you will begin learning about the dance's connection, rhythms, spatial structure, pattern structure, character, and motion. In addition, we will introduce you to the dance’s history, evolution, and current etiquette.

This three-week course should be repeated as often as you wish until you feel comfortable with its content. If you have completed the Intro course at least once, it pairs well with the NEXT STEPS class.

This course is offered every month and is most effective when you can attend the three classes consecutively within the same month. However, each class is also open to drop-in participants. The content will be layered, ensuring that you can always learn something new!

NEXT STEPS, 201

This course will rotate through our basic patterns and look at ways to create variations. We aim to take that base pattern and see how to build a family of patterns. We will start with one and leave with several!

The NEXT STEPS and LABROTORY are meant to work well together. Both courses will always explore the same base pattern but with a different and complementary focus. The NEXT STEPS will focus on the quantity of patterns, and the LAB will focus on quality. Both are equally valuable to a social dancer!

This course is designed to build from week to week, rotating through a 6 different topics. However, each class is also drop-in friendly. The content will be layered, so you can always learn something new!

$15 per class, $40 for 3, $80 for 6

Laboratory

The Lab is a space where we break apart one of our basic patterns to see what’s inside! Once we understand how and why the pattern works, we can further explore and create variations by experimenting with timing, shape, direction, foot placement, style, and more.

Valley West Coast Swing Sunday Socials

Once a month, we gather to dance and socialize; a social dance! We alternate between the two valleys, the New River Valley and the Roanoke Valley. Check the calendar for each month’s location. It's a relaxed, friendly afternoon where all levels of dancers are welcome to come and enjoy. We begin with an hour of instruction to get you moving, and then we dance to a playlist full of current and classic tunes. A safe and welcoming space is a priority, so please read the code of conduct before attending.

OPEN PRACTICE

Open Practices offer a space and time to process the skills you are learning in class before putting them to use on the social dance floor. This means you can safely try out that new move or concept, ask for feedback or help, and get that repetition we all need!

These practices are often connected to class series and will mostly feature music suited to that style. You do not have to have attended the class to join us, this is casual event for all levels of learners looking to improve. A safe and welcoming space is a priority, so please read the code of conduct before attending.
